Dennis & Nancy Edaakie became known for their wonderfully detailed Zuni inlay work, often drawing inspiration from birds, animals, and Kachina imagery. This striking vintage buckle and bolo tie set showcases one of their signature themes — a beautifully rendered pheasant brought to life through intricate stone-to-stone inlay.
Created in the 1970s, the set uses carefully cut shell, coral, and dark inlay materials to form the colorful pheasant surrounded by delicate foliage and geometric borders. The design is elegant and highly detailed, with the iridescence of shell adding movement and light across the silver surface.
It is always fascinating to see how many Zuni artists interpret animals not traditionally found around Zuni Pueblo itself. The pheasant motif gives this set a distinctive Southwestern-meets-sporting aesthetic that feels both refined and wearable.
The bolo retains its original Bennett Pat. Pend. C-31 clasp, a finding often used during the period and helpful in dating the piece to the 1970s. Both the buckle and bolo display exceptional craftsmanship, from the precise inlay work to the balanced framing and clean silver edges.
Today, the Edaakie family tradition continues through their son Derrick Edaakie, who carries on the legacy of fine Zuni inlay jewelry.
This is a wonderful collector set with strong vintage character, beautiful workmanship, and a direct connection to one of Zuni’s respected inlay families.
