Experimentation is part of every great artist’s journey, and Navajo silversmith Lester James continues to push traditional techniques into exciting new territory. This remarkable handmade ring feels both modern and deeply rooted in Navajo silversmithing traditions — blending classic craftsmanship with a bold architectural design.
At first glance, the ring almost resembles a fabricated channel-inlay piece, yet Lester creates his jewelry using traditional tufa casting methods. That contrast gives the ring its distinctive personality. The wide sterling silver band carries the rugged organic texture left by the tufa stone mold, while the face showcases three vertical channels filled with carefully hand-cut turquoise stones in varying shades of rich Southwestern blue.
Fine silver beadwork separates the channels and adds depth and rhythm to the design, creating a striking geometric presentation that feels clean, balanced, and contemporary. The combination of rough tufa-cast texture and crisp inlay work makes this ring especially eye-catching on the hand.
The turquoise stones display beautiful natural variation, from bright sky blue to deeper tones with subtle matrix, giving the piece movement and character without overwhelming the symmetry of the design.
Bold, artistic, and unmistakably Navajo handmade, this Lester James ring is an impressive statement piece that collectors and Southwest jewelry lovers alike will appreciate for years to come.
