Zuni artists Stanford & Diane Cooche are well known for their precise channel inlay work, and this vintage ranger buckle set is a beautiful example of that signature style.

Created in the 1990s, the four-piece ranger set features gorgeous cuts of spiderweb Chinese Turquoise carefully fitted into sterling silver channels. The inlay has that unmistakable Cooche look—clean geometry, fine silverwork, and stones chosen to flow naturally from section to section.

Today, rising turquoise prices have changed the way many artists approach this style. You’ll often see more shell work or mixed-stone patterns. Pieces like this, with substantial turquoise throughout the entire buckle set, have become increasingly difficult to find.

Designed to fit a 3/4″ belt, the set works beautifully for both women and men. The scale is elegant and wearable, while still carrying the presence of classic Southwestern design.

What makes this set especially collectible is its history. Tucked away with the buckle was a handwritten note reading “Purchased 1994 Ceremonial,” most likely referring to the Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonial. That gives this piece not only age—now over three decades old—but also a direct connection to one of the most important Native art events in the Southwest.

The silver has developed a soft natural patina from decades of careful storage, adding even more character to an already exceptional vintage piece.
