Three Strand Carved Fetish Necklace with Thunderbird Pendant
Kingman Turquoise & Heishe
Fetish necklaces have long held an important place in Zuni Pueblo jewelry traditions, with each carved animal carrying its own symbolism and spiritual meaning. Birds often represent freedom and connection to the heavens, bears symbolize strength and protection, foxes embody intelligence and adaptability, while the Thunderbird stands as one of the most powerful guardian figures in Native traditions.
This remarkable three-strand Zuni fetish necklace was acquired through a Ceremonial Association auction in the early 2000s and showcases an extraordinary collection of hand-carved turquoise animals strung among finely matched turquoise heishe beads.
The necklace features fifty individual fetish carvings, all cut from vibrant Kingman turquoise. The carvings include birds, bears, foxes, armadillos, and many other animals, each displaying its own personality and hand-carved detail. The turquoise is beautifully matched throughout the necklace, creating a flowing consistency of color from the fetishes to the strands of heishe.
At the center hangs a large carved Thunderbird pendant, grounding the entire design both visually and symbolically. The Thunderbird serves as a powerful focal point and gives the necklace an unmistakable presence when worn.
Although the artist remains unknown, the workmanship reflects the strong Zuni carving tradition that became highly collectible during the late twentieth century. The combination of detailed carving, multiple strands, and the sheer number of fetishes makes this an especially impressive example.
The necklace also includes a matching pair of turquoise heishe earrings, completing the set.
